Dutch consumer organization Consumentenbond has warned WhatsApp users to think carefully before choosing a username. Although the new username feature improves privacy by hiding your phone number, using the wrong username could expose your identity and make you more vulnerable to scams. Meta introduced WhatsApp usernames on June 29, 2026, allowing users to connect without sharing their phone numbers. Users can choose to keep using their phone number, create a unique WhatsApp username, or reuse an existing Facebook or Instagram username.
However, there is an important privacy concern. If you want to use the same username as your Facebook or Instagram account, Meta requires you to link your accounts through Accounts Center. This makes it easier for Meta to connect information across its platforms and may also allow other people to identify your WhatsApp account through your public social media profiles.
Why Reusing the Same Username Can Be Risky
Using the same username across WhatsApp, Facebook, and Instagram makes it much easier to connect your online identity. Even though your WhatsApp messages remain encrypted and private, your account information becomes more closely linked across Meta’s services. This can also increase the risk of social engineering attacks. Scammers may search for your username on Facebook or Instagram, collect personal information from your public profile, and use it to impersonate you or launch targeted fraud attempts.
Meta has reserved many usernames for public figures, government organizations, and well-known brands to reduce impersonation. However, reports suggest that some usernames similar to celebrities, politicians, and businesses are still available, creating opportunities for abuse.
How to Protect Your Privacy
The safest option is to create a unique username that you use only on WhatsApp. Avoid using the same username that appears on your Facebook or Instagram accounts. Choose a username that is difficult to guess and does not reveal your real identity or match your other online profiles. Treat your WhatsApp username as public information because anyone who knows it may try to find your other social media accounts.
Use WhatsApp Privacy Settings
WhatsApp offers several privacy tools that can improve your security.
- Limit who can add you to WhatsApp groups.
- Control who can see your personal information under Settings > Privacy.
- Enable a Username Key under Settings > Account > Username. This requires new contacts to know both your username and the secret key before they can contact you.
- Review your privacy settings regularly and restrict unnecessary access to your profile.
These features can reduce the chances of unwanted messages and social engineering attacks.
WhatsApp usernames are a useful privacy feature because they allow users to communicate without sharing a phone number. However, reusing your Facebook or Instagram username may unintentionally connect your online identities and make it easier for scammers to gather information about you. For better privacy and security, create a unique WhatsApp username, enable available privacy protections, and avoid using the same identity across multiple social media platforms. Remember, scammers often succeed not by hacking your account, but by convincing you to trust the wrong person.
