OpenAI has officially introduced its first hardware product for the Codex coding platform. Unlike the AI device being developed with former Apple designer Jony Ive, this new product is designed specifically for developers who use Codex. The hardware, called Codex Micro, is a limited edition collaboration between OpenAI and keyboard manufacturer Work Louder. It provides developers with a faster and more convenient way to monitor, control, and manage Codex AI coding agents directly from their desks.

The Codex Micro features a compact square design with thirteen mechanical keys, a joystick, a rotary dial, and a touch-sensitive control. Its appearance is very similar to Work Louder’s Creator Micro 2 and also resembles a custom keypad the company created with Figma in 2023. The device is built to improve productivity by giving developers dedicated physical controls for common Codex tasks instead of relying only on keyboard shortcuts or software menus.

One of the main features of the Codex Micro is its six illuminated frosted keys, which provide a live status of Codex agent activities. Different colors indicate whether a coding task is currently running, completed successfully, waiting for user feedback, or has encountered an error. This visual feedback allows developers to monitor multiple AI coding sessions at a glance without constantly checking the screen.

The keypad also includes customizable command keys that can perform frequently used actions such as push-to-talk, accepting or rejecting code changes, and sending commands. OpenAI includes thirty-two additional Codex-themed keycaps, allowing users to personalize the device according to their workflow. The joystick can be assigned to launch common workflows, while the rotary dial can adjust the AI reasoning level. All buttons and controls can be configured through the ChatGPT desktop application, giving users complete flexibility.

OpenAI has priced the Codex Micro at $230, and it will be sold through Supply Co in limited quantities. The company has not announced how many units will be available, making it a limited-run product aimed primarily at developers and AI enthusiasts. The Codex Micro is completely separate from OpenAI’s larger hardware project being developed with Jony Ive. That future device is rumored to function as a voice-first AI companion or smart speaker powered by ChatGPT and is expected to launch next year.

Meanwhile, the project has recently attracted attention because of a lawsuit filed by Apple, which alleges that OpenAI misused hardware-related secrets. OpenAI has denied those allegations and stated that the claims have no merit. With the launch of the Codex Micro, OpenAI has taken its first step into AI-focused hardware by creating a practical accessory for developers. Rather than replacing traditional computing devices, the Codex Micro enhances the coding experience by providing dedicated physical controls for interacting with AI agents, making software development more efficient and intuitive.
