PlayStation Network (PSN) experienced a major global outage on July 24, 2026, preventing thousands of players from logging into their accounts, joining online multiplayer games, accessing the PlayStation Store, viewing friends lists, downloading games, and using several PlayStation services. The disruption began around 12:45 PM in Spain and affected PS5, PS4, the PlayStation mobile app, and Sony account features in multiple countries. Although some services gradually returned during the afternoon, many users continued to experience connection errors, frozen screens, unexpected sign-outs, and login failures before the network was fully restored. Sony later confirmed that account management, PlayStation Store, social features, PlayStation Video, and PlayStation Direct were operating normally again, though a small number of users still experienced temporary issues.
The first reports of the outage appeared shortly before 1:00 PM, and monitoring platforms quickly recorded thousands of complaints worldwide. Many users encountered the error message “Something went wrong” along with error codes such as WS-116414-7 and WS-116486-6, indicating network communication problems. The outage did not affect everyone in the same way. Some players remained connected for a short time before losing access, while others could use certain features but were unable to access online games or digital services. Sony’s official service status page initially showed that all systems were operating normally before later acknowledging problems with several PlayStation Network services.
The timing of the outage closely matched a networking issue reported by Amazon Web Services (AWS) in its US West (Oregon) region. AWS identified the problem as a network routing device failure between the Oregon region and the Seattle metropolitan area. After implementing corrective measures, AWS restored its network infrastructure, reducing errors and latency. Although AWS resolved its incident, PlayStation Network required additional time to stabilize because millions of user requests needed to reconnect gradually. Sony has not officially confirmed that the AWS outage was the sole cause of the PSN disruption, but technical evidence strongly suggests the cloud service interruption played a significant role.
During the outage, users were unable to access online multiplayer games, PlayStation Plus features, digital license verification, PlayStation Store purchases, game downloads, PlayStation Video, account management, trophies, friends lists, recent activities, and several mobile app functions. However, many games that had already been fully downloaded and configured for offline play continued to work without an internet connection. Games requiring constant online authentication, cloud services, or external servers remained inaccessible until PlayStation Network services were restored.
Users who continued experiencing problems after the outage were advised to restart their console, test their internet connection, sign out of PSN and sign back in, reboot their router, and restore game licenses through the PS5 settings if digital games displayed a padlock icon. Sony also recommended avoiding unnecessary actions such as changing DNS settings, deleting games, resetting the console, or changing account passwords unless there were signs of unauthorized access or a security alert.
The incident highlighted how modern gaming increasingly depends on cloud infrastructure. Even when a console and home internet connection are functioning normally, failures within remote cloud networks can interrupt online gaming services worldwide. While PlayStation Network has now returned to normal operation, the outage serves as another reminder of the importance of reliable cloud infrastructure and offline game availability for players.
